Caesar’s heart hammered in his chest as he pulled open the door of the Iron Claws’ clubhouse. Had he ever brought a girl home to meet his family?

Alec must have said something to them, because everyone was lounging about in the front living room holding books and notebooks in their hands that they clearly weren’t reading. They’d even set up a laptop with the camera pointed at the door, Skype projecting Ned's grinning face across the screen. Everyone’s eyes turned to Caesar. They all broke out into applause as Nina followed him through the door.

“Caesar brought a girl home!” Alec cried. “See? You all doubted me.”

Big Joe laid an enormous hand on Alec’s shoulder and squeezed. “You’re right. I’ll never doubt you again.”

“Until the next time you open your mouth,” Emma added, laughing. She walked up and held out a hand to Nina. “Hi, I’m Emma. And don’t mind everyone. They’re lovable monsters once you get to know them.”

Marie sat up from where she’d been cuddled in Dylan’s arms to shake Nina’s hand as well. “Yes, I can attest to that. It will be nice to not be the only human around here. It gets boring when they’re all out flying. How do you feel about cocktail movie nights?”

“Hey! Somebody point me a little higher, I can’t see!” Ned’s voice came through the laptop speakers. Big Joe brought the laptop closer so that Ned could enthusiastically wave at Nina. “Hi! We’ve been dying to meet the famous Knitting Girl for ages.”

“Guys, we just had the one date,” Caesar said. “Slow down. You’re going to scare her away.” He gently touched Nina’s arm, guiding her toward the stairs that led up to the bedrooms.

“Oh, come on, we’re only slightly scary,” Dylan said. He stood up, all immense six foot and change of him, his dreadlocks tumbling down his back. “Come hang out with us once you’re tired of Caesar talking your ear off about musical theory.”

“Yeah, I have some questions for you about Linux,” Alec added.

Nina’s eyes lit up. “What kind of questions?”

Alec tilted his laptop toward her. “Well, I’ve been working on this tricky sequence—”

“Nope, don’t you dare," Caesar interrupted, pulling Nina toward the stairs. "I just got her here. She can play with you later.”

Alec laughed, waving a hand at them. “Yes, yes, you’re right. You kids have fun, we’ll still be here gossiping about you until you get back.”

Caesar wanted to crow with joy. She’d met his family for all of a minute and she fit in beautifully. She didn’t seem intimidated at all, even knowing that everyone in the room (except for Marie) were all massive dragons under their skin. Maybe this is going to work out after all.

“That’s your family?” Nina asked as they headed up the stairs.

“That’s them. Outcast misfits all.” Caesar sat down on the edge of his bed and began rummaging through a duffel bag. “I wanted to show you this.” He pulled out a small photo album and paged through it. Each photo displayed his knitting projects, with a note of who he’d donated it to.
